AlpineAire Gourmet Reserves 1 Year

AlpineAire Gourmet Reserves

The Alpine Aire Gourmet Reserves 1 Year package is a little on the expensive side, but it provides just over 2,000 high quality calories per day—so you can actually survive on it.

Product Description

We really like what AlpineAire, now Katadyn, is doing in the emergency food storage industry. The company makes an effort to be transparent and honest, which is one of the goals of this website. The Gourmet Reserves 1 Year package is a quality product that actually provides enough calories for someone to survive. We reviewed the AlpineAire Gourmet Reserves 1 Year package along the following criteria:

(Note: Due to a country selector, you may need to return to this page and click on the link a second time to get to the correct page.)

Price per calorie

The only real weakness in this package is the calories per per dollar is in the medium range at 234. We know AlpineAire is proud of their food, and they believe it is worth the cost.

Taste

This is really good food that almost rivals Mountain House products. You won’t be unhappy with the taste. This package does get rated down slightly because it contains so many bulk items such as potatoes, peas, and wheat that require someone with a talent in the kitchen to turn into a great tasting meal.

Space

All of AlpineAire’s emergency food comes in #10 cans. Although it’s ideal for keeping out unwanted pests, it doesn’t provide the best use of space. Also, once you have opened a can you only have about a week (depending on humidity) to use it all up. All food comes in 148 #10 cans that weigh 480 pounds.

Shelf Life

Freeze-dried food put in #10 cans is the best shelf life possible. We really admire AlpineAire for stating the conservative shelf life is 20+ years whereas other companies try to inflate the longevity. 25 years is about as good as it gets.

Prep Time

As with other freeze-dried products, the hotter the water you use, the better the taste is. You can eat many of the entrees after letting it sit for just five minutes, but it tastes better after 10. Unfortunately, this package has quite a few items such as bulk potatoes and carrots that require a person to actually mix ingredients and cook.

Other Variations

This package from AlpineAire comes in a variety of sizes. Here are 3 smaller versions of the same package.
